Nettles and Twisted Yarns: Edith van Berkel for Maharam
This September marks the beginning of a major collaboration in rugs with Dutch designer Edith van Berkel. She embraces craft in contemporary explorations of colour, material, and technique. The result of a centralised production process in Kathmandu, the handwoven rugs enlist local materials and weaving practices to lend tactility and warmth to their surroundings.
Surrounded by nettles and twisted yarns as I made both stills and motion work, it was lovely to be in the presence of someone so knowledgable on the processes of rug making.
Always a pleasure to add to my ongoing work with Maharam in which I visit and photograph their collaborators and artist.
